A Rainbow Bee-eater splashes into the water and emerges to fly upwards. The bird’s wings are painted loosely as to convey their flapping motion. Underneath and all around the bird are splashes of water droplets, chaos against an otherwise calm green backdrop of a forest pond.

Splash!

Artwork Description

I observed some really interesting behaviour from Rainbow Bee-Eaters. Yes, this bird is NOT a kingfisher, but a bee-eater. There were several of them diving into shallow water - incredibly difficult to photograph, but I did manage to get a reference photo... Do they do this to simply take a bath? Get a drink? Or perhaps to hunt water-striders? I don't know! But it brought me great joy to capture this unusual behaviour in a painting. It was certainly a challenge to try to capture the motion of the bird's wings, the flying droplets in a moment in time.
