Samovar with Lemons
Artwork Description
Can you smell the Russian Caravan tea? The traditional Russian Samovar was used to boil water for tea, which is often served with a slice of lemon. This was such a fun still life to paint. The samovar and fancy tea cup are typically Russian, of course - that's my heritage. The lemons in this still life were inspired by the half-peeled lemons of the Dutch Masters, and are used as a colour contrast with the striking bright teal-blue background and muted blue tablecloth. The orange garden flowers in the green glass vase also serve as a pop of colour on the table at tea-time, while the water pouring from the samovar into the teacup adds a bit of life to this still life.
