"Nature's great masterpiece - an Elephant; the only harmless great thing" - John Donne.This magnificent bull Elephant from Etosha National Park in Namibia is truly a gentle giant. Old and wise, he contemplates the tiny little bird at his feet, just as the little bird looks in wonder at him. The giant elephant took the time to notice the tiny bird, to stop when it landed in front of him, and waited until it flew away before walking onwards. This painting is based on my own photograph taken in Namibia. It took me many hours to paint all the very detailed, delicate wrinkles, the subtle lights and shadows of the elephant's skin. I loved painting him.
