A Rufous Fantail mother bird sits in a small cup-shaped nest, surrounded by macadamia tree leaves.

A Tiny Home

Artwork Description

I saw this beautiful little Rufous Fantail mum in Lamington National Park - I quickly took a reference photo and moved on so as not to disturb her. I really liked the play of light and shadow through the Macadamia tree her nest was in, and the leaves curling around her little home, shielding her from predators' eyes above. My child thought her nest looked like a little teacup. The Rufous Fantail is a small, active Australian bird that has a distinctive reddish-brown rump and a continuously fanned tail. The dainty Rufous Fantail is usually seen flitting about below the canopy of moist eucalypt forests and rainforests, where they usually inhabit the dense, shady undergrowth.
